Open Source implementation in UM falls into the following categories:-
- Strategic Trust 3: OSS in Education
- Strategic Trust 4: OSS R&D
- Strategic Trust 7: OSS Spoke
Open Source technology had been used by several groups in UM as tools long before it was formally declared as preferred technology by the government for the administrative environment.
The significant usage of Open Source in operational aspect are noted as
follows :
| 1. |
Started in July 2001 with 3 staffs for UMmail project using Php, MySQL & Apache |
| 2. |
October 2002 : Perolehan Barangan IT : using PostgresSQL which is claimed to be equivalent to Oracle |
| 3. |
November 2003 : Integrated Accounts Management System using OpenACS, TCL & AOL Server |
Open Source implementation in UM's operational aspect by its Pusat Teknologi Maklumat (PTM) is purely to support the Strategic Trust 7 : OSS Spoke for Application Development.
It is not intended in anyways to replace the current academic roles in OSS R&D, but more of providing a working testbed for enterprise wide OSS implementation. It is hope that by providing such approach and support, OSS technology development is given enough ground to simulate real life implementation.
